The Clearwater River Watershed District was established as a unit of local government on April 9, 1975, by order of the Minnesota Water Resources Board, acting under authority of Chapter 112, MSA (the Minnesota Watershed Act). Though the original thrust of the CRWD and its five-member Board of Managers was the improvement of water quality in the Clearwater River Chain of Lakes, its scope has grown into a complete program of water management within its boundaries.
Floating bogs have become a problem on the Chain of Lakes as wind and waves break up anchored bogs and pieces float and land on shorelines. Occasionally, floating bogs can block water flow and cause a rapid rise in lake level. Shorelines and homes can be affected.
The Clearwater River Watershed District will only remove bogs if they are impeding water flow and will threaten flooding of properties. With respect to Clearwater Lake this includes the stream between Lake Augusta and Clearwater Lake, and it includes blockage at the Grass Lake bridge. If flow blockage occurs contact the CRWD as soon as possible.

Water quality testing is essential to determine the overall health of a lake and to determine progress over time. The CRWD has tested the water in Clearwater Lake for over two decades.
